Hello,
I am experiencing an issue with a 2-node Windows Server 2008 R2 failover cluster.
All cluster validation tests do not report any problems.
Symptoms:
- McAfee version 4.5 has been installed
- The witness disk and c:\windows\cluster have been excluded from scanning
- The status of the Public Network becomes partitioned after failing over all resources from the active node to the passive node and then restarting the node that has become passive.
Steps to reproduce:
1) Failover all resources to the passive node.
2) Restart the node that has now become passive
After the node has rejoined the cluster, the status of the Public Network will become partitioned.
If you look at the details of the Public Network, the status will be “unreachable” on both nodes.
Steps to resolve:
1) Stop the cluster service on the passive node.
The status Public Network on the active node will now be “Up”.
The status Public Network on the passive node will now be “Unavailable”
2) Start the cluster service on the active node
The status of the Public Network on both nodes will now be “Up”.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 2 node 2008SP2 (Geographically separated) cluster. I use file and node majority for quorum. There is a file share at third site and both nodes can ping/open the share and the nodes have full controll of the share. Also, there are other cluster/nodes using the same share for quorum. This has worked for several years. After the last round of MS patches the file share witness resource would not come back online for 1 cluster. I tried forcing it online several times but I cancelled after 10 minutes or so. I found that I can add another folder in the original location and reran the qurom wizard, and it came online. I am guessing that maybe the multiple clusters using the same single folder is not good, not sure why it worked for so long though. Anyway, the delete function is gone from the failed file share witness, how can I get rid of the old failed resource?
Thanks

I have a problem in a MSCS when add more than 9 disk in the nodes.
When add 10 disk, the disk management is more slow and all operations whit disks spend a lot of time. The access to disk needs about 5 minutes for get a Backup of SQL (only for open the browser), and each operation needs 5 minutes too. Access to diskpart, access to disk management, change de node of SQL... needs this 5 minutes and if the number of disk increases the wait increases too.
The Storage is in EVA HP P6500.
In Exchange 2010 with DAG I have the same problem.
It's possible because the O.S are in Spanish??? How I can make the access faster? With 9 disks the access is fine but one disk marks the difference.
I have 2 servers connected to a shared storage array using Fibre Channel. Currently there are 2 luns on the storage device.
From the Failover Cluster Manager, when I select “Add Disk” from Storage – Disks, both luns show up and I can add them without problems. But if I choose to only add one of them first (it doesn't make a difference which one is added first), then it will not allow adding the second one later. I get a message: "No disks suitable for cluster disks were found. For diagnostic information about disks available to the cluster, use Validate a Configuration Wizard to run Storage tests."
When I do add one (or both disks at the same time), they work just fine for failover clustering.
I can’t imagine this is by design. Is this a known/unknown issue, or is there something special that needs to be done?
Thanks
Hi,
I'm setting up my first AG using 2 nodes at two sites. We setup a DFS path that points to and replicates a share on both nodes that I'd like to use as the Quorum File Share. That way my Quorum would have a vote as long as one of the sites is online. When using the wizard, it says the DFS path is not valid. I have permissions set so that the cluster object, nodes, and service accounts have write permissions on the share. I found one reference that said DFS is not recommended for a Quorum, but I haven't found anything that says why or that I can't do it.
Is it possible to set the Quorum File Share Witness to be a DFS path? If so, how do I do it (can it be scripted instead of using the wizard)?
I have yearly mandatory shutdowns at each site that i want to avoid by replicating the Quorum rather than losing the cluster if the site containing my Quorum goes down. My other option is to deploy at a third site, but that site too has mandatory shutdowns. I need to support automatic and manual failovers. It's an entirely company-internal environment; I can't use any external cloud computing solutions.
Thanks greatly for your time.
cheers.
Hi all,
I implemented at one of my Customer a Windows cluster 2012 for SQL Server AlwaysOn and we faced a problem during a failover test scenario but I just want anyone to confirm if the behavior is normal or not and why.
My configuration is the following :
2 cluster nodes with Windows Server 2012 and a FSW. We don't have a shared storage for this cluster.
We have two network cards on each server. One card ("public") is used for cluster and client communcation and the other ("private") is used for cluster network communication only. The communication between the 2 nodes and the FSW (located on a fileshare server on the same domain) are made by using the "public" card.
We tested different failover scenarios :
1- Shutdown one node --> the failover of the core resources (FSW, name and ip of the cluster) is ok
2- Turn off one node --> failover ok
3- Disable the "private" card on one node --> cluster is ok
4- Disable the "public" card on one node --> no failover occurs and all the core resources are in the failed state
I don't understand why in the situation number 4 the failover doesn't occur. If I issue a manual failover of the core resources the failover works well. If I disable the "private" card after disabling the "public" card on one node the failover also occurs. Is this behavior normal for you ?
Thanks in advance for your responses

Hi Everyone
I have built a Windows 2008 R2 Failover Cluster. It is scheduled to be a HyperV cluster, but I have removed HyperV from the equation as I am having problems.
Its a 2 node cluster connecting to a PS4000 via iscsi.
Network config is
Nic 1 - Host and Cluster Management - 10.160.19.x/24
Nic 2 & 3 - icsci 10.160.46..x/24, MPIO,
Nic 4 - CSV - 10.160.47/24
Nic 5 - LiveMigration - 10.160.49.x/24
Nic6 - VMSwitch - HyperV Virtual Machine "External" nic.
The cluster ip is on 10.160.19.x.
The Cluster validation passes sucessfully and so does creating the cluster and performing post creating validations. When I simulate failures of the Quorum disk, it fails over to the second node after requisites retrys on the first node...all good.
However when I simulate failures on the second cluster disk, it just fails on the primary node. I can bring it online on same node or if I stop the cluster service on that node, everything successfully fails over to the second node. But automatic/simulating failover isn't working.
When I dump out the cluster log(below)this is all the entries pertaining to the failover attempt. Sorry for the log dump.
My analysis of the log, leads me in two directions, Is my nic assignment and config correct? Can I confirm the Cluster disk guids are identical between nodes?
I appreciate any assistance. Apologies on the large log.
Thanks

Hi,
We have a hyper-v cluster with two nodes running Windows Server 2012. All the configurations are identical.
When I try to make a Live migration from one node to the other I get an error message saying:
Live migration of 'Virtual Machine XXXXXX' failed.
I get no other error messages, not even in event viewer. This same happens with all of our virtual machines.
A normal Quick migration works just fine for all of the virtual machines, so network configuration should not be an issue.
The above error message does not provide much information.
We tried every option suggested in the above article and also lot of other things in technet site.
But still we have some issues in DAG, where it automatically failover from one mailbox server to another.
Isatap interface isatap.{} is no longer active.
Cluster node '' was removed from the active failover cluster membership. The Cluster service on this node may have stopped. This could also be due to the node having lost communication with other active nodes in the failover cluster. Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your network configuration. If the condition persists, check for hardware or software errors related to the network adapters on this node. Also check for failures in any other network components to which the node is connected such as hubs, switches, or bridges.
The Cluster service is shutting down because quorum was lost. This could be due to the loss of network connectivity between some or all nodes in the cluster, or a failover of the witness disk. Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your network configuration. If the condition persists, check for hardware or software errors related to the network adapter. Also check for failures in any other network components to which the node is connected such as hubs, switches, or bridges.
Can someone help us to get the solution for this as it is very much frustrating with DAG & win 2k8 R2
We are running 2008r2 Storage Server with a 2 node cluster(node and disk majority). It sounds like that when the cluster fails over, we need to have the new active node restart the Microsoft Groveler Service because we have SIS enabled on the cluster disks. How can I schedule the new active nodes to restart the groveler service after a cluster failover? I can probably just have the service restarted once a day on both nodes and we would be fine, but that seems like a bad work-around.
Thanks,
Dan

Hello,
I am experiencing an issue with a 2-node Windows Server 2008 R2 failover cluster.

Hi all, I am having an issue hopefully someone can help me with. I have recently inherited a 2 node cluster, both nodes are one half of an ASUS RS702D-E6/PS8 so both nodes should be near identical. They are both running Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 hosting some 14 VM's.
Each node is hooked up via cat5e to a PromiseVessRAID 1830i via iSCSI using one of the servers onboard NICs each, whose cluster network is setup as Disabled for cluster use (the way I think it is supposed to be not the way I had originally inherited it) on it's own Class A Subnet and on it's own private physical switch...
The SAN hosts a 30GB CSV Witness Disk and 2 2TB CSV Volumes, one for each node labeled Volume1 and Volume2. Some VHD's on each.
The Cluster Clients connect to the rest of the company via the Virtual ExternalNIC adapters created in Hyper-V manager but physically are off of Intel ET Dual Gigabit adapters wired into our main core switch which is set up with class c subnets.
I also have a crossover cable wired up running to the other ports on the Intel ET Dual Port NICs using yet a third Class B Subnet and is configured in the Failover Cluster Manger as internal so there are 3 ipv4 Cluster networks total.
Even though the cluster passes the validation tests with flying colors I am not convinced all is well. With Hyperv1 or node 1, I can move the CSV's and machines over to hyperv2 or node 2, stop the cluster service on 1 and perform maintenance such as a reboot or install patches if needed. When it reboots or I restart the cluster service to bring it back online, it is well behaved leaving hyperv2 the owner of all 3 CSV's Witness, Volume 1 and 2. I can then pass them back or split them up any which way and at no point is cluster service interrupted or noticed by users, duh I know this is how it is SUPPOSED to work but...
if I try the same thing with Node 2, that is move the witness and volumes to node 1 as owner and migrate all VM's over, stop cluster service on node 2, do whatever I have to do and reboot, as soon as node 2 tries to go back online, it tries to snatch volume 2 back, but it never succeeds and then the following error is logged in cluster event log:
Hyperv1
Event ID: 5120
Source: Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClustering
Task Category: Cluster Shared Volume
The listed message is:Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume2' ('HyperV1 Disk') is no longer available on this node because of 'STATUS_MEDIA_WRITE_PROTECTED(c00000a2)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.
Followed 4 seconds later by:
Hyperv1
event ID: 1069
Source: Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClustering
Task Catagory: Resource Control Manager
Message: Cluster Resource 'Hyperv1 Disk in clustered service or application '75d88aa3-8ecf-47c7-98e7-6099e56a097d' failed.
- AND -
2 of the following:
Hyperv1
event ID: 1038
Source: Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClustering
Task Catagory: Physical Disk Resource
Message: Ownership of cluster disk 'HyperV1 Disk' has been unexpectedly lost by this node. Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your storage configuration.
Followed 1 second later by another 1069 and then various machines are failing messages.
If you browse to\\hyperv-1\c$\clusterstorage\ or\\hyperv-2\c$\Clusterstorage\, Volume 2 is indeed missing!!
This has caused me to panic a few times as the first time I saw this I thought everything was lost but I can get it back by stopping the service on node 1 or shutting it down, restarting node 2 or the service on node 2 and waiting forever for the disk to list as failed and then shortly thereafter it comes back online. I can then boot node 1 back up and let it start servicing the cluster again. It doesn’t pull the same craziness node 2 does when it comes online; it leaves all ownership with 2 unless I tell I to move.
I am very new to clusters and all I know at this point is this is pretty cool stuff but basically if it is running don’t mess with it is the attitude I have taken with it but there is a significant amount of money tied up in this hardware and we should be able to leverage this as needed, not wonder if it is going to act up again.
To me it seems for a ‘failover’ cluster it should be way more robust than this...
I can go into way more detail if needed but I didn’t see any other posts on this specific issue no matter what forum I scoured. I’m obviously looking for advice on how to get this resolved as well as advice on whether or not I wired the cluster networks correctly. I am also not sure about what protocols are bound to what nics anymore and what the binding order should be, could this be what is causing my issue?
I have NVSPBIND and NVSPSCRUB on both boxes if needed.
Thanks!

Hi,
I'm running an Exchange 2010 SP1 DAG on Windows 2008 R2 SP1. We are using an INFOBLOX appliance for DNS resolution.
DNS resolution is working and SRV records are created.
On one of the two clusternodes I get warning 1579 and error 1196 every 15 minutes. After looking around on the internet and technet, I found kb 977158 stating the problem and resolution. However this hotfix is not applicabel on Windows 2008 R2 SP1 .
How can I resolve these annoying events?
Event 1196 failoverClustering:
Cluster network name resource 'Cluster Name' failed registration of one or more associated DNS name(s) for the following reason:
DNS bad key.
.
Ensure that the network adapters associated with dependent IP address resources are configured with at least one accessible DNS server.
Event 1579 Failover Clustering
Cluster network name resource 'Cluster Name' failed to update the DNS record for name 'DAG.domain.local' over adapter 'NIC1-LAN'. The error code was 'DNS bad key. (9017)'. Ensure that a DNS server is accessible from this cluster node and contact your DNS server administrator to verify the cluster identity can update the DNS record 'DAG.domain.local'.
We have a server 2012 cluster setup for SQL 2012, we've reconfigured the cluster listening port to 1435 and now I'm trying to configure a alias/network alias to point clients to the correct server/port. On a non-clustered environment this can be done fairly easily using SQL Server configuration manager however with the addition of the cluster things aren't quite as straight forward.
I've found very little information on the subject, one article I found described the use of "setspn" however the article in question doesn't go into much detail on using this within a cluster.
Has anyone had to do this? Seems like a fairly straight forward/regular request but I can't find anything that clearly defines whats required.

Recently we were applying Windows Updates to the nodes in our cluster. When we attempted to move an instance of SQL back to an updated node it failed. I found & fixed a problem with the domain account that SQL runs as on the node where we tried to move to.
When we tried to move SQL again, we got a different error an Event ID 1207 with 'Unable to obtain the Primary Cluster Name Identity token.' In researching this I came accros this Forum entry http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/9e21b6e4-a5ca-4ee9-bcd6-681a8f32c824/cant-bring-network-name-on-line, which lead me to this as a possible solution https://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2009/04/27/recovering-a-deleted-cluster-name-object-cno-in-a-windows-server-2008-failover-cluster.aspx?Redirected=true
So I troop-off to my domain controllers. DNS has the servers & virtual server entries. However, it appears someone deleted the 3 server (nodes) of my cluster from the AD Computers OU.
I restored the AD, but my oldest backup doesn't contain the servers, so now I'm stuck trying to figure out the easiset solution to the problem. These are production servers, so rebuilding the cluster could be beyond scope.
Can I just re-add the servers to the AD Computers OU? Or are there additional tasks that I need to undertake.
Thanks,
BigSam
