Affordable iSCSI or JBOD solutions for personal lab environment

I am looking for an affordable solution for my personal lab that will enable me to play with Hyper-V Failover Clusters.  I have looked at iSCSI and JBOD solutions but they were all way out of my price range.  I already have two Windows 2012 Hyper-V hosts and am looking for a shared storage solution to use with the Failover clustering.  Thanks.

Hi,

Can anyone tell me about the sharename changing in a Cluster available storage

please see the scenario i did

Created 2 Win2k8 R2 Srv and enabled cluster named CLUTEST its IP is 10.10.0.250 ( Cluster IP)

there are 2 Drives as available Storage ( E: & F: )

one for Quorum  (D:).

here i can access the data from 10.10.0.250\E$.

while i check in share and storage management MMC i can see the E$. i need to change its share name to test$ is that possible ? and is that possble to share the drive or folder inside the available storage ?

i tried to enable the fileserver roll and try to enable the share. it is possible but the it need other IP so i dont go for that...

anyone can tell me about my concern ? \

Steps for moving Server 2008 witness disk to new LUN?

I've recently set up a new SAN and I would like to start moving my existing cluster volumes over to the new SAN. I'm assuming I should start with the witness disk? Can anyone tell me the correct process for doing this? I would appreciate the help. I'm running a failover cluster on Windows 2008 Enterprise SP2.

Thanks for the help.

Volume Mount Points in Server 2012 Failover Cluster

I am trying to figure how I configure a LUN to use a Mount Point and be available in a failover cluster.  I am currently only able to access a LUN if it is set as a CSV Volume or assigned a drive letter.  I was able to access mount points successfully in 2008 but can't seem to get this working with 2012.  Has this been removed from 2012?

The access disk is more slow when insert 10st disk with Windows Server 2008 R2 Spanish in MSCS with SQL 2008R2

I have a problem in a MSCS when add more than 9 disk in the nodes.

When add 10 disk, the disk management is more slow and all operations whit disks spend a lot of time.  The access to disk needs about 5 minutes for get a Backup of SQL (only for open the browser), and each operation needs 5 minutes too.  Access to diskpart, access to disk management, change de node of SQL... needs this 5 minutes and if the number of disk increases the wait increases too.

The Storage is in EVA HP P6500.

In Exchange 2010 with DAG I have the same problem.

It's possible because the O.S are in Spanish???  How I can make the access faster?  With 9 disks the access is fine but one disk marks the difference.

High Availability Storage - How??

Hi

I am just getting into the whole clustering and high availability area, particularly focusing on hyper-v. I already know about having redundancy for all the components which make this solution up with the exception of storage. I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of how to make separate storage systems provide redundancy or work together, I have the following scenario and information (none of this has been purchased yet):

Two node hyper-v cluster

Two NAS devices which support iSCSI (each NAS device states it will do replication to the other NAS device, but how current this replication will be I am unsure of). Specifically this is “QNAP TS-869 PRO 8TB 8 Bay NAS Server with iSCSI” details can be found http://www.misco.co.uk/product/Q556273/QNAP-TS-869-PRO-8TB-8-Bay-NAS-Server-with-iSCSI

Within each NAS device there are 8 drives which can be configured as RAID in various levels, but what I am struggling to understand is how to make my two node cluster continue to provide service should an entire NAS device be taken out of operation. Is there some magical way these devices can be put together in a similar way to how RAID 1 works at the disk level? Is there a way our cluster nodes could mirror the data directly across both of these NAS devices.

I will be using the free edition of server 2012 R2 Hyper-V but if there are some features in the full product which allow us to do what I am after I am happy to hear your thoughts. Also, can a solution be made which doesn’t rely on a separate windows file server cluster to do any of this mirroring as I only will have a two node hyper-v cluster, I am not looking to be throwing loads of servers into the mix to accomplish this really.

Suggestions on other suitable NAS devices, technologies, configurations whatever are all welcomed, the more I understand about this the better. Without being able to mirror the data between two NAS devices this is obviously still a single point of failure for me.

Thank you very much

Cluster Quorum drive is dirty

I have 2 node windows 2008 R2 cluster and the Quorum drive has become dirty.  While created a new file/folder, getting an error disk structure is corrupted and un readable. I need to run chkdsk /F to fix the issue but I can't run it now in production, Also currently cluster is running fine with no errors. My question is when/how frequently cluster reads/writes data to quorum drive, coz when that happens cluster there would be a problem.

CSV Best Practices

IOPS are the deciding factor when it comes to single CSV or multiple CSV.....if IOPS required by VMs hosted on the CSV are enough then one CSV is good enough and easy to manage.....and if the workload is more, it is better to have them on separate CSVs..........Kindly correct me if I wrong

There are couple of things that come to my instantly that in case of failure of disks, all the VMs would be affected as well as in the case maintenance, there would not any CSV left to temporarily move VMs.  Your comments on it are appreciated.

Also, if there any technet article/blog post that have the pros and cons listed, and if you could share them, i would appreciate as well.  Thanks.

Cluster Drive letter missing after failover

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2 node file cluster on windows server 2008 R2 SP1, was well working before. However since few days its giving me trouble.

Node1=FS01

Node2=FS02

when ever there is a failover from FS01 to FS02 the E Drive (shared SAN drive) doesn't appear on the server however the Quorum is available, the disk management does not allow me to bring the E Drive online as the option is degraded also there is an error "disk offline due to policy set by administrator" something like that. When the cluster is moved back to FS01 the E Drive works fine.

Abdul Majeed.

Maximum LUNS in Hyper-V 2012 Cluster

Hi,

In Hyper-V 2008 R2, I was told that "Windows does not have a great track record managing many LUNs. From experience we see scale issues anywhere at 150 LUNs and above."

I was also told "MSFT is currently fully engaged in the next revision of the platform that all this is built on....."

Wondering if 2012 can support more LUNS.

Is there any one that has an idea how many LUNS will work well on a Hyper-V 2012 cluster.

Please don't answer this question unless you have solid knowledge about this matter.

(sorry I asked this recently but wasn't given a direct answer, so I am asking again more directly).

Thanks

Question about a failover issue with Windows 2012 cluster

Hi all,

I implemented at one of my Customer a Windows cluster 2012 for SQL Server AlwaysOn and we faced a problem during a failover test scenario but I just want anyone to confirm if the behavior is normal or not and why.

My configuration is the following :

2 cluster nodes with Windows Server 2012 and a FSW. We don't have a shared storage for this cluster.

We have two network cards on each server. One card ("public") is used for cluster and client communcation and the other ("private") is used for cluster network communication only. The communication between the 2 nodes and the FSW (located on a fileshare server on the same domain) are made by using the "public" card.

We tested different failover scenarios :

1- Shutdown one node --> the failover of the core resources (FSW, name and ip of the cluster) is ok

2- Turn off one node --> failover ok

3- Disable the "private" card on one node --> cluster is ok

4- Disable the "public" card on one node --> no failover occurs and all the core resources are in the failed state

I don't understand why in the situation number 4 the failover doesn't occur. If I issue a manual failover of the core resources the failover works well. If I disable the "private" card after disabling the "public" card on one node the failover also occurs.  Is this behavior normal for you ?

Thanks in advance for your responses

Cluster Disk failover problem

$

Hi Everyone

I have built a Windows 2008 R2 Failover Cluster. It is scheduled to be a HyperV cluster, but I have removed HyperV from the equation as I am having problems.

Its a 2 node cluster connecting to a PS4000 via iscsi.

Network config is

Nic 1 - Host and Cluster Management - 10.160.19.x/24

Nic 2 & 3 - icsci 10.160.46..x/24, MPIO,

Nic 4 - CSV - 10.160.47/24

Nic 5 - LiveMigration - 10.160.49.x/24

Nic6 - VMSwitch - HyperV Virtual Machine "External" nic.

The cluster ip is on 10.160.19.x.

The Cluster validation passes sucessfully and so does creating the cluster and performing post creating validations. When I simulate failures of the Quorum disk, it fails over to the second node after requisites retrys on the first node...all good.

However when I simulate failures on the second cluster disk, it just fails on the primary node. I can bring it online on same node or if I stop the cluster service on that node, everything successfully fails over to the second node. But automatic/simulating failover isn't working.

When I dump out the cluster log(below)this is all the entries pertaining to the failover attempt. Sorry for the log dump.

My analysis of the log, leads me in two directions, Is my nic assignment and config correct? Can I confirm the Cluster disk guids are identical between nodes?

I appreciate any assistance. Apologies on the large log.

Thanks

Is there any MS documentation on SoFS in a multi-site architecture?

Cannot add cluster disk on windows 2012

I have 2 servers connected to a shared storage array using Fibre Channel.  Currently there are 2 luns on the storage device.

From the Failover Cluster Manager, when I select “Add Disk” from Storage – Disks, both luns show up and I can add them without problems.  But if I choose to only add one of them first (it doesn't make a difference which one is added first), then it will not allow adding the second one later.  I get a message: "No disks suitable for cluster disks were found. For diagnostic information about disks available to the cluster, use Validate a Configuration Wizard to run Storage tests."

When I do add one (or both disks at the same time), they work just fine for failover clustering.

I can’t imagine this is by design. Is this a known/unknown issue, or is there something special that needs to be done?

Thanks

dfs for quorum file share witness in AG config?

Hi,

I'm setting up my first AG using 2 nodes at two sites.  We setup a DFS path that points to and replicates a share on both nodes that I'd like to use as the Quorum File Share.  That way my Quorum would have a vote as long as one of the sites is online.  When using the wizard, it says the DFS path is not valid.  I have permissions set so that the cluster object, nodes, and service accounts have write permissions on the share.  I found one reference that said DFS is not recommended for a Quorum, but I haven't found anything that says why or that I can't do it.

Is it possible to set the Quorum File Share Witness to be a DFS path?  If so, how do I do it (can it be scripted instead of using the wizard)?

I have yearly mandatory shutdowns at each site that i want to avoid by replicating the Quorum rather than losing the cluster if the site containing my Quorum goes down.  My other option is to deploy at a third site, but that site too has mandatory shutdowns.  I need to support automatic and manual failovers.  It's an entirely company-internal environment; I can't use any external cloud computing solutions.

Thanks greatly for your time.

cheers.

Disimalar RAID Configurations and Validation Check in a Two Node Failover Cluster

I am currently trying to put together a two node Windows 2012 Hyper-V cluster.  I have two identical servers except for the RAID configuration.  On one server I have a RAID 10 with 4 disks which are a mixture of SAS and SATA drives which total to 2 TB.  On the other server I have two SATA drives with no RAID configuration which total to 2 TB.  I need to know if this will pass the Validation test in the Failover Cluster Manager?  Thanks for your help.
