Move existing connections on a failover server

$

I'm getting ready to set up a 2012 failover cluster with a connection broker for rdp into file servers. Is there any way to manually move rdp connections from one node to another? All I can find is the ability to drain connections, but my users run statistical jobs that can run for a couple of weeks. If I have to wait until they log out, servers might not get security updates until a month after they're released.

Am I missing something? If not, what do cluster admins do in this situation?

NLB Issue

Hi,

We are facing some issue with NLB. PFB setup details

1. 2 ADFS servers are in NLB.

2. 2 ADFS proxy servers are in DMZ network(192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2)

all are installed with windows server 2012 R2 OS, and from network side DMZ to ADFS servers all ports are allowed.

Issue: When we configure NLB with IGMP multicast , we are able to ping/telnet from one DMZ machine(192.168.0.1) to NLB IP but from other DMZ machine(192.168.0.2) we are not able to ping/telnet, when we changed the NLB setting to Multicast , same issue.

But in Unicast setting, the we are able to ping/telnet from 192.168.0.2, but from 192.168.0.1 we are not able to ping/telnet.

Note: we are able to ping/telnet to individual machines from both DMZ machines.

Please help us where exactly the issue.

Hello All,

Every few days we receive the following message from our Hyper-V Cluster.

Cluster Shared Volume 'disk 1' ('disk 1) has entered a paused state because of '(c000020c)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.Cluster Shared Volume 'disk 1' ('disk 1') has entered a paused state because of '(c000020c)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.

We are running on Windows 2012R2 with all the patches till 01-05-2015.

All the VM's off the CSV volume stay online and there are no interruption within the VM's. Anybody a idee how ik can solve the message.

Network Drops for 30 seconds During Hyper-V Live Migration

I have 3 physical Hyper-V hosts setup with clustered storage. I disabled VMQ because I was getting errors when trying to do live migrations. I have also ran the network portion of the cluster validation tests without errors. What happens is basically when I do a live migration from any host to any other host I lose network connectivity to any VM running on those hosts. During this time I have a SQL application that is running and locks up and freezes all the users. Many will have to use task manager to kill the application to get back in or even reboot their machines to free it up.

I have been doing a ton of reading on network settings and configurations and have made no progress. Any help to point me in a direction to get this solved will be appreciated. I need to be able to do Live Migrations on my cluster storage.

Thanks for any help.

Failover Cluster: CSV Network Migration

Our main VM CSV is connected to our iSCSI on the wrong network.  We have three Cluster networks:

5.x - iscsi

40.x - cluster network / live migration

50.x - client vm network

For some reason the ISCSI is connected via the .50 at the moment on both of our CSV's, which means its passing all that traffic through our router.  The 2nd CSV is just backups so it was easy for me to shutdown, and reconnect to the ISCSI volume. Doing the CSV with our other of dozens of vm's is not so easy and would require a scheduled outage on a weeekend.

Is there a graceful way to make it rollover to the correct network without bringing everything offline?  I found this article and set the metric for the right network. But how do I make it reconnect without dropping connections?

Cluster not work !

Hi all,

I created cluster with 2 nodes (Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard)

- Node 1: 2 x CPU E5-2630 2.3 GHz

- Node 2: 1 x CPU E5-2620 2.0 GHz

- CSV storage on IBM v3700 by iSCSI

2 nodes update all hot fix from online Microsoft.

And its passed validate OK.

But when i try to live migrating, i face the error as some event ID:

-1069

Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine New2' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role 'New2' failed. The error code was '0x5' ('Access is denied.').

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

- 1205

The Cluster service failed to bring clustered role 'New2' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered role.

- 1254

Clustered role 'New2' has exceeded its failover threshold.  It has exhausted the configured number of failover attempts within the failover period of time allotted to it and will be left in a failed state.  No additional attempts will be made to bring the role online or fail it over to another node in the cluster.  Please check the events associated with the failure.  After the issues causing the failure are resolved the role can be brought online manually or the cluster may attempt to bring it online again after the restart delay period.

I check in event log and error with Hyper V Role:

- 3080

'New2' could not create or access saved state file C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\New2\Virtual Machines\EB6D4BA0-6AB6-42C6-9999-89FD9C6246C0\EB6D4BA0-6AB6-42C6-9999-89FD9C6246C0.vsv. (Virtual machine ID EB6D4BA0-6AB6-42C6-9999-89FD9C6246C0)

- 3040

'New2' could not initialize. (Virtual machine ID EB6D4BA0-6AB6-42C6-9999-89FD9C6246C0)

So, is there any body face same error and already resolve, please support me !

After I change my Server processor, one of my vm can not restore, the event id is 24004 and 12050, my Hyper-V server is server 2012R2, latest update installed.

The virtual machine 'vmname 'is using processor-specific features not supported on physical computer 'hostname'. To allow for migration of this virtual machine to physical computers with different processors, modify the virtual machine settings to limit the processor features used by the virtual machine. Windows 2012 File Server cluster - issue with adding file share

$

Greetings All,

I have physical 2-node (nodes A and B) Windows 2012 Standard cluster with File Server role installed (standard SMB, no CSV/CAFS). Both nodes are alike, hardware and software-wise with the same patching level. LUNs presented for clustering are served by iscsi (EMC VNX).

The issue that I'm running into is when I try to create new shares. While running 'Add File Share -> Quick' wizard from Failover Cluster Manager on node B with file server being active on node A, I don't see my (online) volume available for selection in the 'Share location'->'Select by volume'. It is grayed out. The same when I try to run the wizard locally on the active node. Only when I run the wizard from node A with File Server being active on node B I'm able to see the volume in the wizard. Running the wizard locally on active node yields the same problem.

I'm using Domain Admin account for all above.

As a separate note, I get the following warning message on the first screen when running add file share wizard:

"Unable to retrieve all data needed to run the wizard. Error details: Cannot retrieve information from server (A or B, depending on which node I run it from). Error occurred during enumeration of SMB shares. The WinRM client sent a request to HTTP server and got a response saying the requested HTTP URL was not available. This is usually returned by a HTTP server that does not support WS-Management protocol"

Obviously I don't have additional roles/features installed to provide support for HTTP based requests but I don't think this is mandatory. Besides, I get the same error even in the only scenario mentioned above that allows me to create shares.

Also, when trying to create new shares from 'Server Manager-> File and Storage Services ->Shares' hangs indefinitely with "loading data...'

Any help with getting new share creation/making volume appear when running the wizard across both nodes consistently working would be greatly appreciated and rewarded.

Thanks,

Peter

2012 NLB (multicast) times out after several minutes

Hi All,

We have two 2012 servers that are a part of an NLB cluster using multicast.  We are using Cisco networking equipment.  Each VMware VM has a single NIC configured.

We are finding that after a few short minutes of inactivity, the NLB's IP address will timeout until the NIC on either VM is disabled/enabled, and then it works again for a few minutes.

This issue does not appear to be reproducible on our 2008 NLB servers that are on the same host/subnet.

Machines on the same subnet are also unable to resolve the cluster IP address, in addition to systems on remote subnets.

The router has a static ARP entry for the cluster IP/MAC address, which is all that we have done in the past for our Windows 2008 servers and never had a problem.  We have also tried adding a static entry to the MAC address table to meet the same results.

Did something change with 2012?  Please let me know if I can provide additional information.

W2K12 R2 - Cluster Resource IP Address Replace Node IP Address In DNS

I have a two node Windows 2012 R2 Standard cluster.  When the cluster resource is placed on a node in the cluster, the node's IP address on our Windows 2008 R2 DNS server is updated to the cluster resource's IP address.  When I move the resource from node 1 to node 2, Node 1's IP address is changes back to the correct IP address, but node 2's IP address is update in DNS to the resource's IP address and vice versa.

Live Migration and Storage Migration

Can anyone help me please with the answer to the below question

You have a datacenter with 6 servers. Each server has Hyper-V Role installed and runs Win 2012 R2. The servers are configured as below:

Hostname                              Processor Manufacturer                               Storage Type

Host1                                Intel         Local Disk

Host2AMD iSCSI Disk

Host3AMD Local Disk

Host4IntelCSV

Host5IntelCSV

Host6Intel                                                         iSCSI Disk

Host 4 and Host 5 are part of a cluster named Cluster 1.Cluster 1 hosts a VM, VM1. You need to move VM1 to another Hyper-V Host. The solution must minimize the downtime of VM1.To which server and by which method should you move VM1?

1) To Host3 by using a storage migration

2) To Host6 by using a storage migration

3) To Host2 by using a Livemigration

4) To Host1 by using a quick migration

According to me, Number 4 is eliminated as quick migration involves some donwtime, compared to live migraiton

Number 3 is also eliminated because of different processor manufacturers.

Is the answer Number 2--> To Host6 by using a storage migration?

Shadow Copies on 2012 R2 File Server Cluster

$

Hello all!

I've inherited a two node physical 2012 R2 file server cluster that contains a few SMB shares on a single clustered disk.  I'd like to enable shadow copies for this shared disk but want to store the shadow copy data on its own shared disk as per shadow copy best practices (at least on non-clustered file servers).

I created a second cluster disk, assigned it to the same resources as the SMB clustered disk.

Now historically I've enabled shadow copies through computer management but I want to ensure the shadow copies are cluster aware so in the Failover Cluster Manager I open Storage | Disks and right click the SMB cluster disk and click the Shadow Copies tab. From the tab I can Enable shadow copies, this sounds like what I'm looking for, unfortunately it does not give me an option to choose a disk/volume to store my shadow copy data, so this can't be right.

My next step was to connect computer management to the cluster virtual server name (NOCFS4) and through the System Tools | Shared Folders | All Tasks | Configure Shadow Copies it shows me the correct number of shares on the SMB cluster disk plus I can see the Settings button for configuring the location and size limit for shadow copies, however once I tweak the shadow copy location and size settings, click Ok and click Enable to turn on the shadow copies I get a long pause and an error about not being able to create a schedule. So it seems connecting to the cluster virtual object is not the answer either.

That leaves using computer management to connect to one of the physical server nodes of the cluster. When I open the shadow copy interface on the physical node I note that it shows a 0 for the number of shares it detects on the SMB clustered disk. This doesn't surprise me since this interface isn't cluster resource aware.

So I'm stuck. Does anyone know the "Microsoft way" to enable shadow copies on a clustered disk while storing the shadow copy data on a second cluster disk both attached to the same cluster resource?

AlwaysOn Cluster reboot due to file share witness unavailability

$

Hi Team,

Anyone came across this scenario in AlwaysOn Availability Group (two node), file share witness times out and RHS terminate and cause the cluster node to reboot. File share witness is for continuous failover and if the resource is unavailable my expectation was that it should go offline and should not impact Server or Sql Server. But its rebooting the cluster node to rectify the issue.

Configuration

Windows Server 2012 R2 (VMs) - two node, file share witness (nfs)

Sql Server 2012 SP2

Errors

A component on the server did not respond in a timely fashion. This caused the cluster resource 'File Share Witness' (resource type 'File Share Witness', DLL 'clusres2.dll') to exceed its time-out threshold. As part of cluster health detection, recovery actions will be taken. The cluster will try to automatically recover by terminating and restarting the Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) process that is running this resource. Verify that the underlying infrastructure (such as storage, networking, or services) that are associated with the resource are functioning correctly.

The cluster Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) process was terminated and will be restarted. This is typically associated with cluster health detection and recovery of a resource. Refer to the System event log to determine which resource and resource DLL is causing the issue.

Bitlocker protected cluster disks fail to mount

Hello

I am trying to Bitlocker protect some CSVs.

I am following the instructions here:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/dn383585.aspx

I can format and prepare the disk, and enable Bitlocker sucesfully. The disk is accessible on the host and I can lock and unlock the drive (with the recovery key) without an issue. I have correctly added the CNO to the list of protectors for the volume.

As soon as I add the disk to the cluster however, the disk fails to come on line in the cluster with the following error:

The system cannot open the device or file specified. Error Code 0x8007006e.

I am using Windows Server 2012 R2 (Core running Hyper-V). The hosts are connected to a Dell Equallogic PS4100 iSCSI array. I have tried with both thin and thick provisioned SAN volumes.

Many thanks

Ben

Name Resolution Not Yet Available

Hi

We have a Server 2012 2 Node Cluster, the purpose of the cluster is ot run the Scale Out File Server role and this role appears to be online and functioning normally.

However we have an error on the underlying cluster which is called "CBStore" whereas the domain network is shown as "Failed" and there is a message that says "Name Resolution Not Yet Available" - I have attached a picture of this to demonstrate the problem.

We are not able to ping "CBSTORE" or it's IP address.  We did have the Windows Firewall turned on each Cluster Node and have tried turning it off entirely to rule it out but this has not had an affect on the problem.

The Cluster was created 18 months and we have been using it OK since, I am not sure when this error message started happening as I rarely have cause to connect to the Cluster and check it out.

The name appears to be registered in DNS OK.  I have done some research and most answers to the "Name Resolution Not Yet Available" problem state there is an incorrect HOSTS file entry but the HOSTS entry on either Cluster Node does not have any data (other than default) inside it.

Any suggestions welcome!

Windows 2008 R2 Cluster drive letter changed unexpectedly

On my Windows 2008 R2 cluster, drive letter changed unexpectedly during fail over. From what I understand, this can happen if the drive letter is already being used by the node at the time of fail over. But I did not find any error in cluster log related to the drive letter. I have seen this happening before on other Windows 2008 R2 clusters too.I want to understand what causes this unexpected drive letter change and what can I do to prevent this from happening.

Dear Expert...

I just done installation of Windows Clustering 2012 R2 + SQL Clustering 2012 R2. However, when i do I/O performance test. the result is not perfect. As per graph below, the I/O seems to have throttled down consistently in every minute with the same pattern. Any idea?

Note: The cluster is connect to SAN storage. The SAN Storage tested fine with other standalone server.

Clustered Storage Spaces and Exchange DAG Without a Cluster Administrative Access Point

$

Hi I have a two questions about that error that I'm getting in Storage poll interface.

I have exchange DAG cluster without a Cluster Administrative Access Point configured and when I open storage poll I receive warning "Incomplete communication with cluster <cluster name>. The following cluster nodes or clustered roles might be offline or have connectivity issues: <cluster name>" What's the reason of that and can it be fixed?

I also wanted to create local storage pool with two local disk on that server that will not be use for exchange cluster but when I try to do that I'm getting info thatSelecting these drives will create local pool and next button is gray out. I think it's like that because on list of primordial pool I see only "Clustered Storage Spaces on <cluster name>" and not "Storage Spaces on <server name>". But when I do:

Get-StorageSubSystem

FriendlyName HealthStatus OperationalStatus
------------ ----------- -----------------
Storage Spaces on EXx Healthy OK
Clustered Storage Spaces on DAGx Healthy OK

Is it possible to create a local storage space when server is a node of storage cluster?
