Renaming a windows 2012 Cluster

What are the implications if i rename the WINDOWS 2012 Cluster.

This is a 2 node windows 2012 and SQL 2014 cluster and after it is up and running we see it is outside the naming convention by a few characters.

If i go to Cluster properties and rename the cluster, what are the consequences.

Quorum setting

I need some advice. I have a 2 node cluster however 1 machine is going to be off for an extended time(its paused and powered down and unplugged). I was in a Node + file share majority. I have tried to change the quorum but receive this error

An error was encountered while modifying the quorum
settings.Your cluster quorum settings have not been changed.Failed
to set the quorum to Node Majority.Failed to configure the cluster
'CLUSTER1' for Node Majority quorum. An error occurred setting the
quorum configuration settings for 'CLUSTER1'.A quorum of cluster
nodes was not present to form a cluster

What route should i go? should i evict the node? what should my quorum settings be? Please advise.

Hello,

We are having two node file server cluster and there are 4 disk resources on two clustered services. Two days back I have added one more disk resource and it goes to offline mode intermittent. When trying to do online manually without any issue it will come back online.Event ID 1069.

Can anybody please assist on this.

Clustered file server in separate locations

Hello.  Have a quick question regarding setting up a clustered file server.  Basically my company has three locations in 3 different cities (all within about a 120 mile radius of one another) and they are all on the same domain.  At all three locations they each have a domain controller that acts as a global catalog server and a file server.  My question is can I setup a clustered file server between the three locations so that if one server was to crash the users would still be able to access their files on the file server from a different city.  I wasn't sure if you could setup clustered servers across a WAN or if it was only doing locally across the LAN.  Basically the users at each location access their files from their local file server, but if their local server crashed I'd love for them to still be able to access their files from a remote server in the cluster.  If this is possible can someone send me in the right direction please?  All three servers are 2012 R2 servers. Thanks

Fail over policies in Cluster 2012

if the clustered role fails more than the maximum time period specified, it will be left in failed state.

What is this settings? I don't want cluster group to go into failed into state rather than I want to move into Passive node.

Problem Now:

One of my resource is failing and my cluster group goes into PENDING state instead of moving into passive node.

Any solution guys?

Cluster-Aware Updating configuration failed

Hi All,

I'm trying to configure Cluster-Aware Updating for my Windows 2012 Hyper cluster.

I have a separate management server (also Windows 2012).

First I created a prestage computer account. I changed the permission of the Computer OU so the cluster account has persmission to create computer objects.

But the configuration still failed with error:

“Unable to create the CAU clustered role because a Network Name resource could not be created. This can occur if a computer account (virtual computer object) for the role could not be created in the domain. Check the event log for more information. If the cluster name account does not have permissions to create the object, you can pre-stage a computer account in Active Directory. Then, use the Add-CauClusterRole Windows PowerShell cmdlet with the VirtualComputerObjectName parameter to create the CAU clustered role. For more information about pre-staging computer accounts, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=237624.”

When I check the Computer OU I see some added computer accounts (CAUNL-C***):

So it's looks like that the permission are correct?

Server 2012 R2 Cluster Failover issues during catastrophic failure of iSCSI shared storage on Node 1 of 2

$

On this posting, I detailed a simple two node Server 2012 R2 cluster configured with a single file server role.  Both nodes accessing shared iSCSI storage.  Client system is performing a simple looped 64 KB read on a file share from the clustered server.  This test applet will fail any time the ReadFile() API fails.

When one node experiences a complete power loss, the other node will take over and no failure will occur on the client system (other than an ~30 second delay where the synchronous ReadFile() API does not return).  This was detailed in the other post. The key point is that failover completed successfully and NO failure was seen on the client PC.

I want to test out a different failover scenario so with Node 1 being the current host, and the owner node for the file server role, quorum disk, and shared storage, I simulate a catastrophic failure of Node 1’s iSCSI storage.  The OS itself boots from a virtual ATA drive so the OS drive will remain alive.  What I do is go into device manager, find the NIC(s) that are configured for the iSCSI network, and then I disable them.  This causes all iSCSI I/O activity to fail.  When I perform this test, the following is seen from the client PC:

  • 11:20:01 - Node 1 loss of iSCSI shared storage
  • 11:22:01 - Synchronous ReadFile() returns after 120 seconds with ERROR_INVALID_HANDLE
  • 11:22:20 - CloseHandle() completes successfully after 19 seconds

I understand the 120 second delay.  It’s a combination of the iSCSI link down timer as well as the MPIO PDO remove period timer.  What I don’t understand is why the request failed.  I expected a failover and successful completion of the ReadFile like I saw when I did a power loss of Node 1.

What’s interesting is that Windows did move the host server, file server, and disk storage, to Node 2.  So a failover did occur.  At least this time it did. Other times, I have seen the file server role stopped.  It appears that the failover occurred immediately after the client PC received the read failure.  Why not complete the failoverbefore failing the client ReadFile request?  Are there timeout adjustments I could experiment with?

Here is Node 1's event log which shows the failover sequence from Node 1's perspective starting just after the catastrophic iSCSI loss on Node 1:

Making NLB highly available

I get how to use NLB to cluster services such as web, ftp, etc. and I've successfully set it up before.  I'm now setting up an ADFS farm and I got to wondering how do I make NLB itself highly available?  If my lone NLB server were to fail, I lose access to all the clustered services.  I've googled around for the best answer, but the results are for how to create clusters the NLB will manage.

I am thinking the best answer is to failover cluster my NLB server?  When I search for failover cluster nlb, I just get results talking about the difference between the two types of clustering.  Can you failover cluster NLB?  If so, how?  If not, what is the proper way to make NLB highly available.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Internal netbios traffic on WSFC 2012

All hello.

Current configuration:
SQL Server of group of availability (AG) 2012 on Windows Server 2012 consisting of two nodes is developed. On each node two network interfaces, one for public access, the second for interconnect (heartbeat) are used.

First node:
Eth1 10.16.0.41
Eth2 192.168.10.1

Second node:
Eth1 10.16.0.42
Eth2 192.168.10.2

The second interface with IP 192.168.10.1 and 192.168.10.2 is private connection, allocated for internal cluster communication.

The administrator of a network noticed strange circulation of a traffic, and suggested it to block:
there is a traffic with IP 10.16.0.41 under a cluster user to the internal address 192.168.10.1 with UDP of port 137 on port 137 according to the netbios-ns appendix, in the same way addresses 10.16.0.42 on 192.168.10.2

Question:

why he addresses to himself?

Long time of creating VM checkpoint on file share storage

Hi,

Why VM checkpoint creating time so long ~6min  on file share storage ?

RAM of VM 10Gb

Same VM on local disk checkpoint creating time <3s

When I reduce RAM size of VM to 1Gb - checkpoint time <1min

When checkpoint was creating I looked to file share storage server and Hyper-v server performance monitor and found that disk and network activity was loaded as usual.

Thanks

Hi,

I am trying to add third node to a Windows 2012 fail over cluster, but gets the following error.

The server 'DR.domain.com' could not be added to the cluster.
An error occurred while adding node 'DR.domain.com' to cluster 'domain-fc'.

Keyset does not exist

The User I am using to Add Node is Domain Admin, so it may not be a permission issue.

All nodes are Windows 2012 R2 VMs on Azure

Multi site failover cluster, Single host server at 2 separate offices

I'm looking at a scenario where we have 2 dell servers, one at our main office, and another at a remote office. Each of these servers has support for 24 virtual processors, 64GB RAM, and a RAID 1TB RAID array. We are currently running SQL server at the main office but I'd like to set this up into a failover cluster with 2 virtual Windows servers at each location (and likely a 5th node at another separate location)

Without the use of hardware storage that is replicated, what would be the recommended way of replicated storage for this environment?

Gateways on SCVMM IP pools

Hi,

I am designing a new VMM fabric for our data center but have seen an article (that i now can not find) that states the gateway has to be .1 for each network as opposed to for example .254.

it stated that this was not a preference but a Requirement.  The articles i have read on  VMM gateways do not highlight this although all the illustrations do have a x.x.x.1 address as the gateway . Can any one confirm this or post a link that says otherwise.

VMs causes physical switch overload

After installing Failover Cluster Manager on a Server 2012R2, when a VM is started using a virtual switch connection to a Cisco 3750, the physical switch gets overwhelmed with high CPU usage and won't stop until the switch is power cycled. When I did the same thing in Hyper-V before I enabled the FCM feature everything worked okay. But high availability is the goal. What is going on with the interaction of FCM and the physical infrastructure.

so I need simple answers with step if possible

kindly help me to understand definitions of below topics. I know it is difficult to answer in simple but still I am trying understand logics so I need simple answers with step if possible

0)Hyper V

1) cluster

2)fail over cluster

3)High availability

4)live migrations

5)quick migrations

6)how to setup cluster meaning needs to have 2 identical server hardware with iscsi 3 connector (storage)

7) it is possible to setup fail over cluster with single host and SAN (storage)

8)hyper V needs to install after installation of OS by selecting feature

9) it is possible to create fail over clustering or high availability between 2 servers if yes how to do same

10)what is network load balance

11) what is smb in windows 2012 R2 how it will used in cluster, hyper etc

12) it is possible to use copper wires instead of fiber channels what is advantages and disadvantages
