Cluster Rolling Upgrade - 2012 R2 to 2019 in one step possible?

The documentation on Rolling Cluster Upgrades on docs.microsoft.com (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/failover-clustering/cluster-operating-system-rolling-upgrade) have not been updated to include Windows 2019 yet.  Will it be possible to perform a RCU from an n-2 Cluster Functional Level, or will this be restricted to n-1?  If other words, can I go directly from Windows 2012 R2 to 2019, or is it only 2012 R2 to 2016 or 2016 to 2019?

Thank you

Tim Reid

windows 2019 s2d cluster failed to start event id 1809

Hi I have lab with insider windows 2019 cluster which I inplace upgraded to rtm version of 2019 server and cluster is shutdown after while and event id 1809 is listed

This node has been joined to a cluster that has Storage Spaces Direct enabled, which is not validated on the current build. The node will be quarantined.
Microsoft recommends deploying SDDC on WSSD [https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/cloud-platform/software-defined-datacenter] certified hardware offerings for production environments. The WSSD offerings will be pre-validated on Windows Server 2019 in the coming months. In the meantime, we are making the SDDC bits available early to Windows Server 2019 Insiders to allow for testing and evaluation in preparation for WSSD certified hardware becoming available.

Customers interested in upgrading existing WSSD environments to Windows Server 2019 should contact Microsoft for recommendations on how to proceed. Please call Microsoft support [https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4051701/global-customer-service-phone-numbers].

Its kind weird because my s2d cluster is running in VMs is there some registry switch to disable this stupid lock ???

HyperV Cluster with S2D on hardware RAID?

Hello,

I would like to create a hyperconverged 2 node HyperV Cluster with integrated storage using Storage Spaces Direct.

The S2D function to sync the storage between both modes is great.

The "software raid" is not.

Am I really forced to use the slow software raid for my cluster, and then boost its performance with SSD cache?

Can't I use a fast Hardware Raid so that S2D gets it presented as a single disk, and then use S2D only for syncing storage between the servers?

If I can't do this, can someone please explain why? This would be the best of both worlds.

Cluster Aware Updating (CAU) - Found leftover state from a previous Updating Run on cluster

Hi team!

We're having an issue with CAU on one of our clusters. A CAU run is scheduled to run, but it never starts. There are no errors generated, it just doesn't start.

If you run "Get-CauClusterRole", everything comes back as expected. However, if you run "Get-CauRun" you get the below message:

"WARNING: Found leftover state from a previous Updating Run on cluster Cluster1"

We have removed and re-created the CAU role a few times as well as deleting the CAU VCO as troubleshooting steps, but it doesn't work. The same issue occurs.

I have reviewed Event Viewer, Cluster logs (Get-ClusterLog) and CAU logs (Save-CauDebugTrace) but can't find anything logged. I also can't find anything online with people having the same issue.

I assume that i need to remove the leftover state somehow, but i have no idea where to look.

Any help with this issue would be much appreciated!

Thanks!
Pter.

HP MSA 2040 move data from Virtual RAID to Linear

Hi

I have an MSA 2040 where at the beginning was created liek follows below:

 - 2x set of 12 disks (2.5 900GB, Virtual Raid) with  no spares.
 - 2x set of 5 disks (3.5 4TB, Virtual Raid) with no spares

Right now with data on it we decided to use spare disks and on all sets so this is the configuration we want:

 - 2x set of 12 disks (2.5 900GB, Linear Raid) with  1x spares each.
 - 2x set of 5 disks (3.5 4TB, Linear Raid) with 1x spares each (already created)

With this we need to move the Data on 2.5 disks volumes to the 3.5 disks and create new Raid on them. After that restore the data to original point.

Whats your advice on this and best practices.

S2D Cluster without RDMA - Network design questions

$

Hi all S2D-wizards!

Let me describe what I'm trying to achieve before asking my actual questions:
4-Node Hyperconverged Hyper-V S2D Cluster based on Server 2019 Datacenter.
(Yes, I'm aware of the blocking right now when creating S2D-cluster on 2019 GA but I guess that's another discussion)
(And yes again, I've already purchased the 2019 Datacenter-licenses for this purpose...)

In each node:

  • 2x10G Mellanox Connect X3 SFP+
  • 4x10G Intel X710 SFP+
  • 2xNon-RDMA 10G Switches dedicated for storage network.
Switches will have a 40GB Trunk between.
    Switches can do virtual stacking.
  • 2x10G Switches for VM-traffic and node-management.
    Non-RDMA - Non-stackable. Pretty basic 10G switches

My idea, which at least looks good on paper in my mind, is to create a simple team for failover on the Mellanox-ports for VM-traffic and node-management.
What would be the most suitable TEAM-type for this? SET or plain old switch independent LBFO?

I've spent the last couple of days trying to figure out how to design/create the storage-network.
There's plenty of guides available on how to configure RDMA-enabled networks but not that much for non-RDMA.
(Reason for not using RoCE is that switches are not compatible and reason for not using iWarp is NIC's are not compatible.)

Most documentation refers to creating a SET-team for storage-network and putting two different network-adapters for SMB behind the SET-team.
Why two nets for the SMB traffic? (SMB Direct?)
Does using a SET-team even make any sense when not utilizing RDMA anyway?

Is there any point in having a separate Live Migration network, if so would you put it on the management-switches or the storage-switches?

Then we the topic of bandwidth-aggregation and fail-over.
When deciding on this design, I was hoping to be able to aggregate the 4-port Intel NIC (used for S2D-cluster storage) over the stacked switches, thus creating an aggregated link of 40Gbps.
I realize this may be a configuration nightmare on the server-side so I'm ready to accept that I may have to ditch the stacking.. However i should be able to achieve 20Gbps? All four NICS connected in an active-passive fashion.
Am I dreaming here or do you agree this SHOULD be possible? If so, what kind of teaming would you recommend? Will S2D traffic be dynamically balanced across all physical nics?

Can anyone please help shed some light over my S2D-project?
Any input is greatly appreciated!

Best regards _Hallberg!

Windows Server 2016 creating Failover Cluster drops the iSCSI targets

$

Hi,

We have 4 blades with Windows 2016 x64 server installed on them with all the updates etc.

There are two drives on each blade, the OS and then a data drive. We have created a virtual VHD disk on each of the blades stored on this drive and mapped them with iSCSI initiator so that each server can see each of the drives, (4 servers in total, seeing all 4 drives).

We run the Failover Cluster Validation Wizard and it does all the relevant tests, such as mounting disks, failover over disks, and they all come back successful during the validation.

When we create the cluster,  all the drives disappear and when you go into iSCSI initiator all the connections are set to 'Reconnecting...' and you can't bring them back online, we have also tried to add our external drive to the server via iSCSI and it's having none of it. Event viewer says the disks have surprised removed!

When you destroy the cluster and give the servers a reboot, all the iSCSI drives re-appear and show as 'Connected'.

In terms of the networking, there are 4 NICs which are all teamed into one, we've tried it this way as well as having separate NICs such as Management and Production & Even Storage, but with no avail.

The fact it works during the validation wizard is baffling, if anyone has any ideas it'd be greatly appreciated!

VM Live Migration Failing

Hello

We have two Windows 2016 STD Servers on a Failover cluster mode. There are 8 VMs hosted on the cluster. Till last month everything was working fine. Now one of the VM (LINUX) which is having 64GB RAM and 5 LUNs of average 500Gb is unable to live migrate to other Host. It is not trying at all and message as 21502. Confirmed VM configuration file is CSV path and no CD/DVD drives attached.

Can anyone please provide some clue.

Regards,

Shibu

Need to be configured HA to N (around 20) number of Linux Containers running on windows server 2016 with docker for windows service.

is this can be possible with a failover cluster setup.

if it's possible how I can access my containers? is with client access IP and port ? or any deferent way?

I have done the HA setup followed steps:

  •  configure the 2 node hs cluster with witness
  • added Failover cluster role > generic service > Docker for Windows (added registry root key for replication )
  • try to access containers with the failover cluster role client access name and IP but it's failing

I have a generic script (.vbs) role running on Windows 2016.

- I tried to place the script in a file server.

- Also, placed on C: drive on both the nodes locally which are part of the failover cluster.

Automatic failover fails with the error:    The Storage control block address is invalid.

I have a SQL Server Cluster Availability Group, and the cluster is configured to use a file witness.

recently I expand the cluster to my DR site and I get a subscription from Azure to host the witnesssite

I want to change the cluster witness from a local file witness to use the cloud witness, but the problem is the option is disabled.

How can I change the Witness, and why its disabled.

Hi

I need to know how long server was shutdown. I manually shutdown for migration and I the server I bring online after a while in a different site. I use the UPTIME.EXE and /S switch to verify the server unavailable time based on the shutdown and boot time.
